I think what makes engineering special is not one specific thing, but just the combination of benefits that you get. Not many jobs combine these things all at once.

The work is interesting, varied and intellectually challenging. It’s also well-paid and secure (engineers are in demand!). If you like being practical, it sometimes has practical elements (so you are not always sat behind a desk). If often means doing something worthwhile, for good job satisfaction. However, it comes with a good work-life balance, in many engineering jobs you are not stuck with long days or nasty shift patterns.

Of course, it’s always down to the individual and what they like to do, and what they find interesting. I wouldn’t say engineering is perfect for everyone!

      Hi Ebonnie 🙂

Wow! What a great question. I really enjoy what I do and I find it really interesting – it might sound silly but I don’t think I could do a job I didn’t enjoy!! The best thing for me about Engineering and my job is that it’s really practical – I’m designing things that will be built around us (roads, bridges, schools and houses, railways) and my research will be used by industry to help better design structures. It’s so rewarding when you see a project you’ve been involved in being built and finished – being able to say ‘I designed that part of the structure’ is a great feeling!!

Like Jeni said, Engineers are in demand – for Civil Engineering we’re always going to need people to design the structures and infrastructure around it! (and we get paid quite well 🙂 ) I think my answer could probably be applied to some other jobs but the main reason I get more out of Engineering than any other job is because I’m really interested in the subject!
